OPERATING A WEBSHOP WITH HIGH-QUALITY PRODUCT DATA FROM A SINGLE SOURCE

Swisscom is the leading telecommunications company and one of the largest IT service providers in Switzerland with annual revenues of CHF 2.8 billion. The company is 51% owned by the Swiss Confederation. Over 19,000 employees, including apprentices, are active primarily in Switzerland, Italy (through the Fastweb brand) and the rest of the world, providing a wide range of services, from digital TV, internet and fixed/mobile telecommunications for end customers, to network infrastructure, cloud and ICT services for corporate customers in the security, banking, energy, entertainment, advertising and healthcare sectors.

The Swisscom ICT B2B Shop, which is available to corporate customers as part of the Swisscom Business Center, offers various ICT products that complement Swisscom's services. Swisscom acts here as a reseller of well-known brands. As part of activities to internalise the implementation and operation of this webshop, an evaluation of partner companies was carried out in order to have the content management process and the provision of the product data carried out by an external provider. The choice fell on the Onedot platform, which has been offering these activities as a core service for several years. For Swisscom, complete outsourcing of the entire product data onboarding process, a high degree of automation and high data quality were particularly important.

A high level of automation is central to product data in the ICT sector, as hardware products usually have numerous technical features, data sheets, supported interfaces, matching accessory products, etc. Swisscom corporate customers should be able to select suitable hardware products and services quickly and effectively from a range of over 120,000 articles via this webshop. If possible, product master data should be obtained from a single content provider, transformed to Swisscom-specific data structures and formats, and delivered automatically. The same should also be done with availability information and prices from the various providers. 1WorldSync was selected as the content provider, and the category structure of the products was also adopted.

With its partnership with Onedot, Swisscom has set itself the goal of acquiring the entire provision of product master data, availability information and prices from a single source in a highly automated and reliable manner. This means that the entire web shop can be operated on a uniform database via a connection to the Onedot platform, which keeps costs low and ensures consistently high data quality.

HOW ONEDOT COULD HELP

In cooperation with Swisscom, the first step was to define the data formats for the data exchange, with Onedot advising Swisscom. An XML dialect was defined as the basis, which can be easily consumed by Swisscom via an interface. Separate data formats were defined for the exchange of product master data as well as for the exchange of supplier data such as prices and availability of products. The data formats were then modelled in the Onedot platform and were then available to implement the data pipelines.

The next step was to connect and configure the 1WorldSync ContentConnector via the corresponding standard interface of the Onedot platform. This integration of the Onedot platform automatically synchronises a subset of the product data pool from 1WorldSync to Onedot, as specified by Swisscom.

Onedot then configured various data pipelines to process the product master data from the synchronised 1WorldSync data pool. Supplier data on available products usually includes EANs/GTINs, MPN (Manufacturer Part Number), brand information, as well as prices and available warehouse capacity. The product master data is first matched with the supplier data, then price and availability information is enriched, various data harmonisation steps are performed, and finally the various files to be delivered are generated based on Swisscom's specification. The final delivery then takes place via an Onedot SFTP endpoint where Swisscom collects the data.

To correct problems in the automatic association of product master data with supplier data, the data pipelines were set up in such a way that feedback on brand names and their changes can be provided continuously and taken into account in the next processing runs. In this way, Swisscom can solve processing problems independently of Onedot support, and the feedback enables the software to be retrained and thus the Onedot platform to learn continuously.

With this fully automated solution, Swisscom has laid the foundation for successful outsourcing of the content management process and can focus on operating the webshop and providing services to its corporate customers.

THE RESULT

Through the connection to the Onedot platform, Swisscom receives product master data for up to 120,000 items including prices, availability and other information from a wide range of suppliers 4 times a day. Swisscom delivers the desired product categories, price and availability information from suppliers on a daily basis via the Onedot SFTP endpoint. Master data and transaction data are processed by the Onedot platform in separate data pipelines and delivered back to Swisscom in optimised XML-based data formats via the Onedot SFTP endpoint.

The product master data from the 1WorldSync data pool is highly automatically associated with the corresponding price and availability information of the suppliers, even in the case of changes to the brand names or suppliers themselves. In addition, this process can also be manually intervened with a specific mapping that can be maintained in the Onedot app. This ensures that products are always displayed in the webshop with the required prices and under the correct brand.

The automated daily onboarding process by Onedot is the prerequisite for operating the Swisscom ICT B2B Shop and offering Swisscom corporate customers holistic services in the area of network infrastructure, cloud and ICT services. The product range can be flexibly adapted and can thus react agilely to the needs of the demanding clientele.

After an initial setup phase, Onedot now provides us with product master data from 1WorldSync and information on the price and availability of our suppliers several times a day, reliably and exactly in the structure we can import. Exactly what we had in mind.
